The Hudson Hotel is a luxury Starck-designed hotel in Manhattan. Located in midtown, just steps from Central Park, Columbus Circle and the theater district, Hudson is a brilliant reflection of the boldness and diversity of the city, while simultaneously representing the next generation of Cheap Chic – stylish, democratic, young at heart and utterly cool. Hudson’s main entrance features a classic Philippe Starck play on proportions—a small door leads into a neutral, low-slung foyer that functions brilliantly as a decompression chamber, transferring guests from the buzz of New York to the separate reality within. This interstitial zone contains a singular, intriguing element where a thirty-foot tunnel of vivid chartreuse-colored light pierces the room at an oblique angle. This luminous glass tunnel houses an escalator that transports you, both literally and figuratively, to a dream world that is both captivating and unforgettable: Hudson’s climactic lobby. With forty-foot ceilings and rampant climbing ivy, it is a soaring and magical space unlike any other.
Features and Amenities
Famed hotelier Ian Schrager teamed up with architect Philippe Starck to transform a YMCA into this ingeniously designed, instantaneous hotspot. Once past the Hudson’s discreet, chartreuse-lit glass doors, guests ride up an enclosed escalator to a cavernous, dimly lit brick lobby topped with an ivy-covered, two-story-tall glass ceiling. On this floor lies the Hudson’s main attractions: The Library Bar in back features walls of leather-bound books, a purple pool table, overstuffed leather sofas, backgammon tables and naturally, a bar—all watched over by oversized prints of cows wearing hats. Further on is the hip Hudson Bar, with an impressive glowing floor and a Francesco Clemente ceiling mural, and the Hudson Cafeteria, renowned chef Jeffrey Chodorow’s take on comfort food. Best of all is an Alice In Wonderland-inspired outdoor courtyard featuring whimsical oversized seats, potted plants and huge lanterns. Consider these gracious public spaces a blessing, since the 1,000 stateroom-style rooms are super-small though luxuriously appointed with crisp linens, light fixtures painted by Clemente, high-speed Internet access and Korres by Agua bath products. The two stunning multiple-bedroom penthouse suites, with huge terraces and amazing views, have been the scene of countless celebrity and fashion industry parties.
One of New York’s hottest nightspots from the moment it opened, Hudson Bar at the Hudson Hotel is a dazzling venue decorated in a riotous collection of styles. It features a glass floor lit from beneath, a hand painted ceiling by world-renowned artist Francesco Clemente, and furniture design that looks like Louis XV meets 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is the perfect place for drinks, lively conversation, people-watching, and experiencing the undeniable excitement of New York.
Hudson Hall is a casual and stylish drinking and dining destination in New York’s iconic Hudson. Located in the space previously occupied by Hudson Cafeteria, Hudson Hall’s playful interiors, designed by Studio Arne Quinze, in collaboration with Morgans’ design team, are reminiscent of an Ivy League mess hall with long, wooden communal tables with rustic black finish, contrasting with red brick walls. Inspired by the atmosphere of a New England campus, Hudson Hall is a modern, collegiate mess hall that allows guests to craft their meal, through the selection of small plates created from premium sustainable-organic products, indigenous to the New York-Hudson Valley area.
Reminiscent of an old English club or drawing room, the Library is the perfect cozy hangout for relaxing by the enormous fireplace, chatting and drinking with friends, shooting billiards, playing a computer game, or reading a book from its extensive collection, including topics ranging from film, theater, fashion and art, to travel and politics. An artful blend of old and new, the Library features an antique billiards table, classic English leather sofas and wing chairs, and antique area rugs residing alongside cyber-desks fitted with state-of-the-art laptop computers.
In the heart of the elevated lobby is an enchanting Private Park with towering 45-foot trees, ivy-covered walls, and an inspired assortment of antique and modern garden furniture. Outfitted with heaters and a glass roof, it is Hudson’s own microcosm of Central Park: an extraordinary refuge for eating, drinking, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors while removed from the bustle of the city below.
