Soho House – Meatpacking District Hotels

Soho House New York is a private members’ club and hotel in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District boasting 24-bedrooms, with each bedroom offering guests a unique combination of luxury and style. Each floor at Soho House serves a different purpose, and the hotel is known for its exclusivity. The rooms are large and interestingly decorated, and the common spaces (restaurant, bar, screening room, dining room, library, etc) ooze glamour and class in a slightly off-kilter way. Soho House is often swamped in the summer months, when New Yorkers attempt to get a spot at the rooftop pool – however, as we’ve all undoubtedly seen on Sex and the City, you’re lucky to get a membership card – and that’s if you can afford to apply! Each space in the hotel is suitable for a wide range of purposes, from curling up with a book to formal dinner parties.
This is exclusive New York chic at its best.

Features and Amenities

There are 24 hotel rooms at Soho House New York ranging in size from 325 to 950 square ft, with each bedroom cooler than the next-some rooms are done in light, breezy colors and fabrics reminiscent of Rococco, while others are dark and moody, draped in velvets and suede. All room rates include the daily complimentary breakfast at the hotel. Continuing on the hotel’s slightly cheeky sense, the rooms range in size from ‘Playpens’ (the smallest) to ‘Playgrounds’ (the largest).

The Playpens are intimate and cozy featuring exposed wooden beams, light brown walnut flooring and vast banquettes upholstered in a funky banana leaf print.  The Playpens have writing desks and big beds with abundant Egyptian cotton dressed pillows. The bedroom drawers are filled with various food and fun items from champagne to Dean & Deluca snacks and playing cards. The bathrooms have walk-in showers and are fitted with Boffi taps, showers and washbasins. The Playpens are all equipped with a Sony 26″ LCD Bravia and DVD Dream System.

Playrooms measure 425 sq ft each and have great views, oversized beds, comfy chairs to sit in and carefully selected vintage furniture. The furniture is a fusion of classical and modern. Hand-woven Moroccan rugs add warmth to the wooden floors while the glass red, white or stone freestanding baths are both stylish and fun. The drawers are filled with snacks, drinks, games and bathroom essentials. All Playrooms are equipped with a 40″ LCD TV and DVD Dream System.

The Playhouse rooms are 750 sq ft of glamour and character with velvet curtains that easily transform the large space into a suite with a separate living area. Each room has 7ft hand-carved beds with luxurious pillows and bedding, antique chandeliers and hand-picked furniture from French armoires to lavish Persian rugs. Original collages and stencils on the walls were commissioned for Soho House New York. The drawers are filled with snacks, drinks, bathroom items and fun things like puzzles and love dice. For bathing fun there are freestanding stone colored egg-shaped baths reflected in giant 70-inch mirrors positioned behind. Every Playhouse is equipped with a 40″ LCD TV and DVD Dream System.

Opulent and luxurious, the 950 sq ft Playground rooms are the largest in the House. The huge windows on both sides of these corner rooms flood the space with daylight while a blend of Eastern and Western influences creates an eccentric and grand interior. When drawn, the velvet curtain dividing the room forms a separate living area ideal for entertaining guests, complete with dining table and guest bathroom. The three Playgrounds have been individually designed, each with a different look and style. Guests may even choose their bed design – Indian mahogany, Venetian silver or a four-poster with sumptuous silk canopy in a traditional French design. Behind the glass and steel divider walls are George Smith mohair velvet covered sofas with antique wallpaper, Moroccan pouffes and thick Tibetan rugs completing the look. For enjoyment and work there is a 40″ and 26″ LCD TV and DVD Dream System. Egg-shaped baths have made their way into the bedrooms and are placed in front of huge 8 ft high Venetian mirrors, adding to the fun of bathing.

Soho House might be known for its rooftop pool, but its spa is also a great feature and find. Cowshed Spa resort is located on the 3rd Floor of Soho House New York Hotel. With luxury spa treatment rooms, private eucalyptus steam rooms and a relaxation space, Cowshed is somewhere to relax, retreat and enjoy a wide range of body care and beauty treatments. The spa boasts a complete range of treatments available from full body massages, body scrubs, facials, waxing and nail maintenance.

Recently renovated, The Library is a room which can feel either intimate or open and spacious depending on how it is set up and used. This might look like your grandfather’s library, but take away the furniture and the books, and you’re left with something totally unique. With its own bar, The Library can accommodate up to 120 guests for a cocktail party or up to 80 for a seated breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is also ideal for brainstorming sessions, interviews, castings and launches. With a 52″ LCD TV and SXRD projector, The Library can display DVD and computer graphics. The hotel also boasts a screening room and the “White Room” which can be used to host dinner parties.

A floor above the screening room, you’ll find the restaurant and bar area. It is open for drinks and food daily from 11am. Members can relax on the 39 ft Chesterfield sofa, sit at the large U-shaped bar or gather at one of the intimate tables surrounding it. The Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Featuring commissioned Swarovski chandeliers in a room retaining many elements of the original warehouse building, The Restaurant has striking views over downtown Manhattan, seats 80 and includes areas suitable for private parties of up to 12 guests. This floor also houses a drawing room and a game room.

The Roof is without a doubt the most famous feature of the Soho House – it’s been featured on numerous TV shows and movies and has become somewhat of a cultural icon in and of itself. The rooftop has fantastic views over the West Village and the Hudson River. Members and guests can lie on loungers or sit at tables for drinks and breakfast, lunch and dinner daily during the summer months. Tables for dining are available on a first come first served basis and bookings can only be made for groups of 8 – 11 people on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The swimming pool is 15ft x 32ft and is open year round. Members (those who pay to use the pool and the facilities at the club) will crowd the rooftop pool during the summer season – anything to seek shelter from the city’s blistering heat.

Location

Not so long ago, the trendiest thing worn in the Meatpacking District was a blood-stained apron. These days, the area is New York’s most fashionable neighborhood, chock full of hip restaurants, exclusive clubs, and paycheck-draining boutiques. Despite the haute onslaught, the neighborhood has managed to retain its blue-collar edge, thanks to the many wholesale meat companies which still operate out of the warehouses between Gansevoort and West 15 Streets. By night, however, the district is transformed, as butchers and meat-cutters disappear, and magazine editors, models, and a stream of Sarah Jessica Parker look-alikes take their place.

The Standard towers over the newly created Highline Park, an above ground walkway that overlooks the West Side Highway and the Hudson River. The Standard may boast its own restaurant and bar, but there are a bevy of other great eateries and drinking destinations in the neighborhood. Whether you’re starting your day with brunch at Pastis or cleaning out the Alexander McQueen store, you’re sure to find lots to do in the Meatpacking District – and of course, you can say you’ve seen and been seen there.
