Crosby Street Hotel – Soho Hotels

The Crosby Street Hotel is a luxury hotel situated on a quiet cobbled street in the heart of New York’s vibrant SoHo neighbourhood. There are 86 bedrooms and suites over 11 floors. Each has high ceilings and full length windows. Interior design by Kit Kemp reflects a fresh, contemporary style. To the other is The Drawing Room, a sumptuous residents lounge with fireplaces, deep sofas and original art leading onto a spacious leafy courtyard garden.

Features and Amenities

Kit Kemp’s bold interiors manage to challenge and soothe the eye all at once: austere charcoal-gray wall coverings set off pastel headboards; soft silk curtains frame steel warehouse windows; gritty brick façades background a lush rooftop garden. Check out the tongue-in-cheek flourishes from an oversize white steel Jaume Plensa sculpture in the lobby to portraits of local dogs in the elevators. But it’s the service that will win you over: an umbrella at the ready for impending rain, coffee and a newspaper delivered within minutes of your request, and a proper hot toddy at the bar. Each of Kemp’s 86 individually designed rooms and suites comes fully equipped with flat screen LCD television, DVD/CD player, iPod docking station, WiFi and custom-made Miller Harris bath products, while the top-floor headline suites offer the additional luxury of uninterrupted, 360-degree skyline views. Further highlights include a leafy courtyard garden, ground-floor bar and restaurant, well-appointed gym, guest-only drawing room and several private event spaces, all impeccably designed and peppered with art works selected by Kemp herself. This impressive list of facilities is rounded off by a luxurious private screening room – a perfectly-executed Firmdale trademark sure to be as big a hit in New York as it has been in London.

The hotel’s Crosby Bar makes no distinction between bar and restaurant (or restaurant and room-service menus), which means you can eat or drink anywhere in the high-ceiling space, at any hour of day, from a gluten-free breakfast of organic barley with stone-fruit compote to a proper English tea. Marshall Altier’s cocktail list is intoxicatingly broad, with drinks that pay tribute to mixologists dead and alive, utilizing such esoteric ingredients as baked-apple bitters, coffee tincture, and hibiscus foam.

Location

The historic SoHo neighborhood (“SOuth of Houston”) is bounded by Houston Street to the north and Canal Street to the south. Originally known as the Cast Iron District due to the many buildings with such façades, SoHo’s historic roots date to the mid-19th Century, when cast iron was discovered as an architectural material that was cheap, flexible, yet sturdy enough to use to build decorative building facades. Craftsmen transformed what had been rather bleak looking industrial buildings made of brick and mortar into structures of architectural splendor and grace. SoHo today still exhibits the greatest concentration of cast iron architecture in the world. SoHo’s decorative facades, along with its ornate fire escapes, Corinthian columns, oversized windows, and beautiful lobbies, are the signature features of a neighborhood that first-time visitors often instantly fall in love with.

Great restaurants are literally everywhere you turn in SoHo, and they are well-known for both the fine cuisine they serve and their stylish milieus. The French bistro Balthazar, the romantic new American cuisine of Savoy, and authentic Raoul’s and Fiamma for Italian fare are all highly recommended. Along West Broadway you’ll find celebrity hotspot, Cipriani Downtown, Barolo, and the inviting, often open-windowed façade and lively atmosphere at Felix. For Japanese cuisine two blocks over on Sullivan Street you can dine at Blue Ribbon Sushi. Beloved for its neighborly old world beauty and charm, and its nearly skyscraperless skyline, SoHo has also become a favored choice for luxury hotel dwellers, especially among those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan.

Over-sized windows provide an abundance of natural light and a great city view in a panoramic setting. The glass enclosed bathrooms feature a rain shower and natural amenities; all created with the guests personal needs in mind. Standard James amenities include nightly turndown service, custom robes and slippers, complimentary WiFi, cocktail and snack bar, luxurious beds, Sony multifunction iPod stations and 100% Turkish cotton towels.

The James also boasts corner studios and one bedroom apartments, but the real stunner is the penthouse loft. Located on the 16th floor, this 1300 square foot loft was designed by world-renowned Dutch designer Piet Boon, whose work marries functional, timeless design and natural materials with distinguishing signature details. In the true Piet Boon tradition, the space is luxurious, airy, and inviting with bleached Oak flooring and espresso stained millwork. The Penthouse includes a dining room, a wet bar, a master bedroom, one full bathroom with a free-standing tub and a double shower, an additional half-bath for guests, and a grand living room showcasing expansive river views, including both the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. State of the art sound and lutron lighting systems to allow for complete environment customization by the guest. The bedroom and bath are private sanctuaries. The five-fixture bath is furnished in white marble with a freestanding soaking tub which has wonderful city views. The bed is luxuriously dressed in the finest Fili d’Oro linens and a soft grey, leather upholstered headboard.

The Piet Boon design team was selected for their modernist style and their exceptional ability to create a comfortable atmosphere and restful interiors through careful curation of natural materials and coverings. Featured pieces include Piet Boon’s Kekke Chaise Lounge and Heit Swivel Chair introduced at this year’s Milan Design Exposition.  The James also boasts two eateries, the David Burke Kitchen and JIMMY.

David Burke Kitchen. The restaurant focuses on wholesome and hearty modern American food, locally sourced and presented in the creative and whimsical style that is Burke’s trademark. Designed by James Beard Award-winner Thomas Schlesser, David Burke Kitchen’s interior is inspired by the surrounding SoHo neighborhood, blending the cool, industrial simplicity of an airy loft with the rustic warmth of a country barn. Guests will enjoy several ways to experience the restaurant, including the Treehouse Bar for artisanal cocktails and homemade sweet and savory “pop tarts” from the Treehouse’s “toast bar;” the loft-like main dining room featuring exposed beams and views through glass walls into the kitchen and wine cave; and outdoor space within the Urban Garden, opening this summer. The dining room boasts a bold, theatrical experience: a carving station where dishes are plated in the center of the action. David Burke Kitchen serves breakfast, lunch, dinner daily as well as weekend brunch. The James in-room dining menu is also provided from David Burke Kitchen.

JIMMY. The James New York’s awe-inspiring rooftop is perhaps the hotel’s most enviable feature. It boasts a sexy social atmosphere, with an enclosed bar and lounge set against 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline. Framed by the hotel’s architectural “halo,” the private rooftop pool featuring teak wood decking and outdoor showers, includes both indoor and outdoor seating for warm weather fun and relaxation. The rooftop bar, Jimmy, is a contemporary interpretation of a classic pub with a 1970’s New York twist. Elements like herringbone floors, a leather trimmed solid wood bar top, brick glazed tile walls, rich blue upholstery and working fireplaces come together to create a sense of warmth. A year-round destination, Jimmy opens into the rooftop pool deck during the warmer months. But whether indoors or out, Jimmy guests are treated to one of the most spectacular views in New York City: a river-to-river vista looking over Midtown, Wall Street, the Brooklyn Bridge and beyond.

Beyond food, there’s a ton of amenities at The James. The hotel features a fully equipped fitness center which is open to guests twenty-four hours a day. The fitness center is located on the 17th floor, looks out over stunning views of Manhattan and features state-of-the-art Life Fitness® cardio equipment. Located on the property’s second floor, carved into the side of the building, the Urban Garden is a lush respite above the din of the city, designed by the hotel’s horticulturist, award-winning landscape designer Rebecca Cole. Replete with grass and botanicals, a bar, outdoor dining spaces, and meeting space with outdoor terrace access, the Urban Garden is enclosed by industrial, concrete walls – a protective shell for the hidden greenery within. The Urban Garden also features a Chef’s Herb Garden, whose flavors season the hotel’s cuisine and cocktails. Pets are welcome at The James, and the hotel offers turn down service, laundry and dry cleaning, shoe shine services, a 24-hour concierge, a business networking lounge and more.

Location

The stylish SoHo neighborhood The James calls home is a rich part of New York City’s cultural history. A former industrial hotbed replete with the high ceilings and huge windows of manufacturing spaces, the SoHo of the mid-20th century drew artists yearning to recast the factories as lofts. Thus the neighborhood was reborn with its modern identity: a haven for artists, with a landscaped crisscrossed by cobblestone streets and dotted with cast-iron architecture. Visitors today are treated to an array of fashionable boutiques and charming eateries. Just a few blocks south is the neighborhood of Tribeca, which stands for the TRIangle BElow CAnal Street. Tribeca also boast cobble-stoned streets, as well as a bevy of boutiques, five star restaurants and tons of antique stores.
