The Inn at Irving Place is a quaint small hotel located just north of Union Square on Manhattan’s famed Irving Place. Two adjoining town houses comprise this unassuming Victorian inn, housed in an 1834 brownstone just south of historic Gramercy Park. While once combined as a single family home, the brownstones also housed everything from apartments, The Ingersol Mens Club, a Speak Easy, and a Beauty Parlor and Day Spa. After completion of a three year renovation, The Inn at Irving Place opened its door in December of 1994. The candlelit tea salon, Lady Mendl’s, is a charmingly dainty venue for afternoon gossip. The quiet location, a short walk from Union Square, is hard to beat, and although the inn has no restaurant, there are plenty of excellent ones nearby: the legendary Gramercy Tavern is just four blocks away.
Features and Amenities
Built in 1834, the two landmark townhouses that make up the Inn at Irving Place have been meticulously transformed to recreate a bygone era of gracious living while offering personalized service and amenities. The twelve guest rooms, junior suites and residences at the Inn at Irving Place are furnished with exquisite antiques of a bygone New York. You’ll find luxurious Frette bed and bath linens, hair-dryers, Sony CD/radio/Alarm or iPod docking stations, two line phones with teleport connection, WiFi in all rooms and throughout the hotel, minibars and work desks in the room, central air conditioning, bathroom amenities from Penhaligon and full size mirrors in each room.
The look—floral-print couches, tasseled lampshades, egg-and-dart molding, and dark-wood armoires—is granny chic, and there’s even a tiny harmonium in the check-in lounge. Named after neighborhood notables such as Edith Wharton and Gilded Age architect Stanford White, the nine bedrooms have antique sconces and copper bar-tops and sinks; around the corner in a separate building, the inn also offers three one-bedroom residences, with full kitchens, separate living rooms, and bedrooms.
The Inn at Irving Place’s crown jewel is its tea salon, Lady Mendl’s. Guests come from near and far to enjoy a scrumptious five-course tea, consisting of a variety of classic finger sandwiches, fresh baked scones with clotted cream and jams, and a large selection of fine teas. The Victorian style architecture and furnishings recreate a time of sublime elegance. Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon is often used for Bridal Teas, small weddings, or as an intimate dining room. The hotel also has a few other rooms available for events. While there’s no in-house restaurant at The Inn at Irving Place, there is a small cocktail lounge, Cibar. If you’re looking to dine, some of the best restaurants in the city are just a few blocks away, including Gramercy Tavern, Barbounia, Friend of a Farmer, Pure Food & Wine and more. Services at the Inn at Irving Place include daily personalized maid service, nightly turndown service, valet service, concierge service, 24 hour limited room service, complimentary New York Times delivery, a European-style Continental Breakfast, parking garages available in the area, meeting, private event and party planning services, as well as complimentary wifi. There is no fitness center at the hotel, but the hotel offers use of a fitness center nearby for an additional charge.
Location
The Inn at Irving Place is located on the small street of Irving Place, just northeast of Union Square. The street is quiet and the buildings small yet impressive. You won’t find any skyscrapers on Irving Place, but nearby, you will find the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt, as well as many historical landmarked buildings, such as the ornate and incredible National Arts Club Building. The Inn is just a block away from Gramercy Park, one of the cities most elusive green spaces – entrance to the park is given by key only, and only those who live around the park are given a key. Irving Place and Gramercy Park in general are extremely exclusive, and reek of old money. The area hearkens back to an old New York, a time when things were more opulent, more glamorous – and The Inn at Irving Place seeks to mimic this era gone by. You’ll find yourself slipping into history at the hotel, which seeks to spoil its patrons.
Once you’d like to enter the real world again, walk a few blocks west from the Inn’s front door, and you’ll find yourself in Union Square, a transportation hub that features a green market almost year round, as well as variety of big box stores and incredible restaurants. Dine at Gramercy Tavern and brunch at Barbonia, enjoy a martini at any one of the numerous bars in the area and hop on the 6 train uptown to make your way to Central Park. If you’re looking for a quieter, more romantic stay than the average luxury Manhattan hotel, The Inn at Irving Place is the perfect place for you.
